Gorman, Ed Moonchasers and other stories NY Forge 1994 0312860102 / 9780312860103 First Hardcover Boards VG+ Same Horror Short Story Collection Each of the 17 stories in this book is a gem: though a few are flawed, the best gleam in perfection. In the chillingly superb title story, the efforts of two teenage boys to befriend an escaped bank robber yield deadly results; " Mother Darkness" is a shocking tale of a social worker with her own unresolved issues; and "Out There in the Darkness," the outstanding closing story, examines a neighborhood watch program that takes the law into its own hands. Gorman's technique is to take average people, place them in extraordinary situations, and then let the story wind itself out. Occasionally, this approach results in dreary sentimentality, as in "Render unto Caesar," about two men who try to save a teenage bride from her abusive husband, but on the whole, it works superbly. These stories cry out for an introduction and summary by Rod Serling; they remind the reader of the best Twilight Zone episodes. Price:

Gorman, Ed Several Deaths Later - The Second Tobin Mystery NY St.Martin's 1988 0312022794 / 9780312022792 First Hardcover Boards VG/NF Same Mystery DJ Copy - The popular game show "Celebrity Circle" is something of a graveyard for show-biz mediocrities, so Tobin, the five-foot-five movie critic with the fiery hair and the equally fiery temper, is les than thrilled to accept a guest stint as the show films a week's worth of broadcasts aboard an ocean liner. But Tobin's career has hit the skids since he solved his TV partner's murder (Murder on the Aisle 1987), money is money, and besides, he gets a free cruise in the bargain. But someone on board has more in mind that fabulous prizes, and Ken Norris, the smarmy emcee of "Celebrity Circle," turs up with a knife in his back. The Captain blames Cindy McBain, the young secretary from Kansas City in whose room the victim's body was discovered. ALthough Tobin fins her wearing nothing but a robe covered in Norris' blood, he thinks she is innocent, if less than pure-- and he swears his belief has nothign to do with her incredible body or her enthusiastically expressed affection for celebrities.
